3rd Graders are Blogging!

In addition to our classroom blog that I update each week, the students have also started blogging. We have an account at kidblog.org. This is a private site where the students can publish to a blog where they can read the posts of their classmates. We will be able to use this site for work on writing during the daily 5 in reading. The students will be able to share their work. The students will also be able to create posts that will be just visible by them and myself. We will be able to use this for reading responses or other questioning activities. There was a huge amount of excitement to write our first blog posts!

Martin Luther King Jr.

In honor of Martin Luther King Day, we learned who he was and what he stood for. We focused on the important changes he helped to bring about and how life would be different. The students listened to clips from his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, and then they wrote about their dreams to make their community, country, or world a better place. The students also created a construction paper portrait, and we hung their speeches with their portraits.

Nature Center with Kelly

Kelly came from the Nature Center again today! The kids were so excited! Today she shared information about deer and caribou. The students had a wonderful time seeing skins, vertebrae, tails, and antlers up close! They even had an opportunity to make a necklace with "cookies" cut from caribou antlers. How cool is that!

Differentiated Instruction by Learning Preferences

In our classroom we learn in a variety of ways. Today we worked on Map Skills for social studies. The students are working with partners, and they could choose to work anywhere in the room.

It's January!

Well, we survived our first few days back after break. The kids were really ready to learn and jump back into the routines. They were ready for lots of AR tests and are getting back into the groove of school!

Since it doesn't seem much like winter outside, we decided to hang up our winter poems and even create some snowflakes to remind us that it truly is winter.

And here are a few of the poems:
Winter Poetry
by Braeden
I can see winter.
I can see snow falling on the cold grass.
I can see marshmallows dropping into hot cocoa.
I can see kids making perfect snow angels.

I can smell winter.
I can smell hot cocoa bubbling on the stove.
I can smell the Christmas roast everywhere.
I can smell garlic bread just coming out of the oven.

I can hear winter.
I can hear a bunch of jingle bells.
I can hear wrapping paper tearing.
I can hear the icy snow banging against the house.
I can taste winter.
I can taste the snowflakes falling slowly into my mouth.
I can taste hot cocoa all over my lips.
I can taste the big Christmas roast.
I can feel winter.
I can feel all the snow covering my hand.
I can feel smooth wrapping paper.
I can feel my toys I got for Christmas.
