Polar Express

Earlier this week we read The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. Well, actually we listened to it at storylineonline.net. Anyhow, the story was the first stop on our Polar Express adventure. Over the last two days the students have been completing learing centers related to the book. Each time they complete a center they get a punch on their ticket. It's been a fun and engaging way to spend the days leading up to Christmas break!

Kat is writing a letter to Santa requesting the first gift of Christmas.

Austin, Skylar, and Keegan are finishing up their Polar Express trains.

Katie, Paige, Cierra, and Trevor are thinking hard on some Polar Express story problems for math.

Leny works on some comprehension questions based on the Bloom's Taxonomy levels.

Ethan and Braeden plan a trip from Schleswig, Iowa to the North Pole. They needed to include at least three different modes of transportation

Priscilla practices her spelling words in the shaving cream "snow".

Paige is working on writing about her magical midnight train ride.

Skylar and Austin following instructions to build candy trains.

Camryn, Kat, Trevor, Katie, and Braeden reading The Polar Express as a readers' theater.

Multiplication Time!

The 3rd graders are so excited that we've started multiplication! We've worked on understanding what multiplication is and how it works. They have used manipulatives to illustrate problems, and they have also created arrays to clearly show the problem. We have practiced 0's, 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's to get our feet wet. We'll continue with those after Christmas break, and we will practice, practice, practice. Watch for a multiplication packet to start coming home in January.
